T20 World Cup Warm-up Games: Bangladesh Impress

June 3rd, 2009 by kapoor

It may sound a bit strange to some folks that a team that has lost both of its warm-up games is the one that has impressed the most so far in this lead-up to the World Cup in England. In their opening game, Bangladesh were fiercely competitive and nearly reached the 200-run mark against a very decent Aussie bowling line-up. It was just that they had conceded too many runs that ultimately led to their loss. Again, in yesterday’s match against the Sri Lankans, the Bangladeshis nearly won the match and stretched the much better-looking Lankans with just two balls to spare. It seems that they are the best option if you are looking to bet upon the biggest upset-makers of the tournament. And when you consider that just a year or so back, a lot of their players had defected to the ICL, this performance seems a lot more credible. The big problem remains their very unpredictable bowling which is downright pedestrian on some days.

After the bad experience in 2007 WC, I am glad that Bangladesh is not in the same Super 8s group as India. Bangladesh might create some upsets in their group consisting of Pakistan, SL and NZ. Pakistan will have to especially be wary of them.

I won’t call them the most impressive team in the warm ups though. SA impressed me the most.
