What are Sehewag and Dhoni up to?

June 10th, 2009 by kapoor

This has to be saddest thing that has happened to the Indian cricket team in the recent past. Dhoni has been remarkably good so far in his captaincy of the Indian team and has handled the media well too. However, things are just going downwards with the kind of reports that are coming from England. For starters, both Zaheer and Sehewag were injured before the Indian team landed in England. So, if the team can persist with Zaheer, isn’t it possible to keep Sehewag too in the squad and let him heal-up and play in the latter part of India’s campaign. Further, even if he did conceal his injury, was it necessary to inform the whole world about it? I am not blaming Dhoni entirely for this but it should be noted that he had the authority to keep these issues away from the media and could have just told the curious journalists that Sehewag would need time to heal and that is why Karthick is being asked as his replacement. God knows what really happened but in the end, it is looking a bit too ugly for a captain and a batsmen who are now senior pros in the team and should have handled their issues much better.

No one knows what exactly happened, but going with Dhoni’s track record, I will back him in this.

Whatever information we get, is through the media. It is the same media which is relentlessly pursuing an apparent non-issue.

It is quite sad that you are also falling a victim of what the media is dishing out. Everyone knows how the media in India is evolving. Something similar to what the UK paparazzi is. They will go to ANY lengths to get sensational news-bytes, which are more often than not untrue or half-cooked.

You talk about Dhoni/team management concealing the fact that Sehwag hid his injury. Can’t we expect some sensibility from the Indian Media also? Can’t they first VERIFY the source of the news that there is any rift between Sehwag and Dhoni? The fact that Sehwag is going back to India to get a shoulder surgery done actually vindicates Dhoni’s stand of not playing him in the matches… and it also clearly shows the true colours of the Indian media… the fact that Sehwag is coming back means that he was actually injured and also shows that there probably wasn’t any rift between him and Dhoni. Not playing Sehwag was clearly a decision made on fitness and not because of any rift.

Media can go to any lengths to get people to see/read/hear their news and surprise them. Some crap good-for-nothing news channel/paper might have thought that its a good idea to start a rumour about a rift between the captain of the Indian team and one of its most effective batsmen so that they can make a quick buck. Of course, who will read a news of any rift between… say… Dhoni and Ojha??? The media are ruthless when it comes to discoloring people’s reputations. Anything for more TRPs! I am very ashamed with the Indian media.

Princess Diana was also one of the victims of the relentless shameful media. Now they are hell-bent on making India’s possibly most successful captain their next victim. And in the course of that, they will also put India’s world cup defense on the line. Who cares whether India wins the world cup or not. If more people see my news channel/paper, the TRPs will go up and so will my pay-check!

I totally agree with you - the more I am reading into this supposed altercation between Dhoni and Sehewag, the more it seems that the entire episode was hyped-up for no apparent reason. The only thing that got me going was Dhoni looking so miffed at the press conference, when he said that the BCCI would update on Viru’s status and not him - that seemed a bit too awkward and he looked clearly perturbed. other than that, I agree, it is making too much out of a trivial issue, nothing else.

  3. jatanr Says:

Yes I agree with you there. Dhoni should have been more composed. A person gets really upset only when he is totally honest or if he has something to hide. I think in Dhoni’s case, it was the former.

BTW, I hated his captaincy during the Super 8s match with England. Right from the team selection to the batting order!
