Australia’s Exit is Divine Justice
June 11th, 2009 by writemanFor the students studying in Australia the news of the Australian cricket team getting booted out from the ICC T20 World Cup must have come as an act of divine justice. Can’t help it, the timing is so perfect that it suggests so. Just when the media is awash with stories of atrocities committed on Indian students in Australia their team is booted out of the ICC T20 World Cup. With the Australian law taking its own course and time in dispensing justice, such developments that seems to have been delivered by the divine power, give quick relief. Though the wounds may take time to heal, it seems as a mild vindication and the Indian students will now harbor the hope that “there is more to come”.
Imagine Australia losing a final. This is not even the semi final stage. It is the preliminary round and losing at this stage is unbelievable for Australians that put such a premium on cricket. The fact that it is a T20 tournament hurts even more. T20 has gained supremacy in terms of number of viewers, number of tournaments played each year, player fees, and sponsor rushes.
It may sound a bit child like but don’t we relish the idea of revenge when we are wronged? Aren’t our Bollywood movies of the 70s and the 80s based on revenge as the dominant theme?
Racial abuse and disregard for common courtesy is not new to the Australian team. Remember the shoving of Sharard Pawar out of the dais and the innumerable sledges hurled at our cricketers. Perhaps the divine forces decided to start the retribution with the arrogant Aussie cricket team. We hope that more such punishments would come and we would be able to see the connection.
