When Sachin Plays India Loses!!
November 11th, 2007 by prashantI have heard this soooo many times from a certain group of people, including sports critics. I would like to put that to rest once and for all.
What is the logic behind this? Let me put forth a few possible scenarios to consider in order to validate this claim by Sachin’s critics.
——————————————————————
Myth #1:
Sachin’s average when India loses is very high compared to his career average.
Fact #1:
Career Average: 44.23
Average when India Loses: 32.92 With 11 Centuries and 35 Half-Centuries
Myth #2: Sachin’s average when India wins is very low compared to his career average.
Fact #2:
Career Average: 44.23
Average when India Wins:56.68 With 29 Centuries and 50 Half-Centuries
Myth #3: Sachin was responsible for India not winning the 2003 WC.
Fact #3: Sachin was Man Of The World Cup in 2003 scoring highest runs ever in a single world cup (673). In comparison, our then captain Ganguly scored 465 runs, including a “duck” in an all important against Pakistan.
Very straight forward right?
If that was not enough these people also claim that India wins when Sehwag plays or Ganguly plays. Well that is when it all becomes crystal clear. Here is how.
India’s winning percentage (low) matches with percentage of times these players play well (few). That creates an illusion that somehow they are in sync with India’s success. How else will you not blame Ganguly for getting out on 9 or Sehwag for not capitalizing on the great start, for India’s loss in the Mohali ODI , but blame Sachin for scoring 99 of 91 balls.
Or may be I am totally missing something.

The truth is - Whether India wins or loses, Sachin always plays and plays well.
Prashant stop bothering about neagtive comments on Sachin. Sachin is going to stay in the team with all the dignity and before anyone could think of his removal, he is smart enough to call it a day.

Interesting Stats.
One complain people have is that Sachin does not play when the team needs him. He does not play in important matches. Then they give the example of the 2003 WC Final.
Err… who got the team to that position single handedly ?
I REALLY wish he had played in that game. But then if he had played and scored a century and got india to 200 in 25 overs and after that had gotten out, I am sure India would have lost anyway. So that means he did not play for the team, right?
Any person who has played gully cricket would know that just one shot is enough to get you out. But all that sensible logic is lost when Sachin plays cricket, right?

nice post Prashant…You have written it very systematically and proved all the myths wrong…Another thing i would like to say is that even after, Sachin or for that matter any batsman, scoring a century India loses it is not his fault but other 10 players fault…

It’s like a catch-22 situation! People criticize Sachin for not performing and then if he performs and India loses, they still criticize him! So, Sachin is in a soup whether he performs or not.
Like writeman said, we have to stop bothering about the negative comments on Sachin! I am reminded of a Marathi saying - ‘kavlyachya shaapane gaayee marat nastaat’ (literally translated to - cows don’t die because of a crow’s curse).
