Gary Kirsten, Indian Cricket Team’s Next Coach?
November 27th, 2007 by prashantOver the past few months there has been enough false alarms regarding the India’s coach assignment to have a doubt about this appointment getting confirmed. But if you ignore that then from all the reports I have read so far, Gary Kirsten would be India’s next head coach.
Kirsten’s career as a South African opening batsman has been quite a successful one, both in Tests and ODIs. He is also considered a clutch players, handling pressure of the situation quite well. There is a good chance that this quality might rub on some veteran as well as upcoming players and being a South African player he is bound to focus on improving Indian team’s fielding situation.
So, assuming he accepts the job and all formalities go through this time around, let’s wish him all the luck and success.

It was quite unexpected and the fact that BCCI kept everything hush-hush means that they didn’t want to jump the gun this time! Also, Kirsten has said that he still hasn’t received a formal contract and he will make the decision only after getting a green signal from his family. Assuming everything goes smoothly, we would be looking at Team India’s new coach, an assignment termed as the toughest job in cricket!
Someone had posted on Rediff BCCI’s obsession with the letter ‘G’! First it was Greg Chappell, then Graham Ford and now, almost certainly Gary Kirsten. While the first two appointments didn’t go so well, let’s hope that if Gary is indeed appointed coach, then Indians achieve ‘g’lorious success and not ‘g’ruesome failure!

May be BCCI will be the third time lucky with the ‘G’s

Interesting development in the coach saga - the senior players say that they do not want a coach for the Australia series!

Well the report is in the Mumbai Mirror, which is a masala paper which just has made up stories. It is the ’stardust’ of daily newspapers. ‘News’ in Mumbai Mirror should be taken with a rock of salt, not just a grain of salt…
I have no insider information about this though

Gary indeed seems to be the front runner for the Indian Team’s coaching position. Although a good player, let us hope that he does not turn team India into a ‘boring’ team like South Africa. We along with the Pakistanis are known for a particular brand of cricket which has got a lot of flair which cannot be ‘taught’. Good examples would be the batting of Yuvi and VVS, even Ganguly. Let us hope he does not tamper with the natural skills of our guys.
His appointment is also somewhat ironic in the sense that it has due to his brother Peter Kirsten ( after that (in)famous ‘mankeded’ out incident)that relationship between Team India and South Africa hit a record low. How time flies!!! It only looks like yesterday when this incident happened. Of course it must be lingering fresh in Sachin’s mind. He was there during that incident.

I hope what you say is true and these rumors are baseless, or else the saga of finding a coach for the Indian team will run even longer than the Energizer bunny…
