Clean Bowled by a Googly?
November 30th, 2007 by charuAs much as I like Sachin, I hate to see him get out in this manner - especially when he is set (or so we think!). How can a batsman of his caliber get out - CLEAN BOWLED - on a googly? What is happening here? I know coach Buchanan is saying his feet are lazy at the beginning of the inning these days so they want to use short pitched balls in upcoming tour of ‘down under’. But on 82 we would think he is set (for a century?) and sees ball the size of a football and reading bowling arm like back of his palm.
Unfortunately by His standards anything short of a century is a failure. So I am just wondering what is wrong … (what is lazy rather) … feet / eyes / brain?

I agree with you charu. Was not expecting Sachin to get out that way at that juncture in the match. I was watching when he got out and I feel that Sachin might have gotten carried away in the aggression. He tried to hit that ball over cover. Not exactly the type of shot you would play in test cricket, but because he had been out there settled and playing for some time, Sachin purely misread it as a leggy and tried to smash it over cover.

Not sure about Sachin, but I can tell you from experience that with age, you do become lazy at least with respect to feet and eyes. But, Sachin is just 33, no?

May be the constant ‘digs’ about him scrapping around when he nears a landmark got to him and he wanted to just get on with the game and paid the price !!!!!

Though it is disheartening to see Sachin get out like this in Eighties and Nineties time and again, this is million times better than seeing him play “over-cautiously” as he did last year (including the World Cup). This way he may not add too many centuries to his already loaded record, but will make a lot many winning contributions for India.

Well, at least he got out to a spinner and to a fuller ball, so Buchanan’s theory falls flat on its face
!
On a serious note, I agree with Prashant. I think we should look at not how he got out but the manner in which he scored the runs. I remember reading the bulletin on Cricinfo and they described Sachin’s innings as ‘energetic’…almost diametrically opposite to ‘lazy’. He scored at a strike rate of 75, that’s high even for him in test cricket.
I also agree with Charu! For die-hard fans like us, it is unfathomable to see Sachin get out that way. But, if everyone wants him to play like he did when he was younger, then this is to be expected I think. Again, it’s a catch 22 situation. You don’t want him to be over-cautious but not over-aggressive as well! At this point in his career, he should play the game the way he wants to play!
If cricket is religion and Sachin is ‘God’, then his intentions should never be questioned, nor should he be criticized for his actions!

He gets out early… (below 10)… he should retire
He gets out after 50… we are not happy.. he should have made a century
He gets out just after a hundred…. he plays for himself and was just waiting to get his century…
He gets out at 136… he did not carry india to victory…
He played one false shot in 82 runs…. we say ‘how can he do that’.
Yes he misread the googly that time.. yes he was bowled… maybe when the ball was released from kaneria’s hand something distracted him for a split second so he could not see the spin on the ball.
My point is… mistakes happen! He is just human… yes he is GOD for some people (like me) but he is the GOD of a religion called CRICKET. He is not competing to be GOD with Shiva, Brahma, Jesus or Allah.
He is the supreme GOD (of Cricket) because he has sustained that level of performance for all these years. He plays ALL the shots in the book, and with equal finnesse. Ask 10 different people what they think is Sachin’s best shot and you will get 10 different answers. The Laras, the Haydens, the Waughs, the Pontings, the Inzys all came and went… the funny thing is… every year for the past 17 years, whenever there is a debate of the greatest batsman of the era.. ONLY one name is constant in all those discussions… strange na?
