New Power-Play Format, Why Bother??
November 13th, 2008 by prashantLooks like the coming India/England ODI series (which starts on Nov, 13 in Rajkot) will test out a new Power-Play format, which will allow the batting side to choose the timing for one of those PPs.
Why do we need to make any such changes to the current power-play format? The reason for Power-Plays itself is to offer the batting side some advantage by enforcing fielding restrictions. Now the batting side can decide when those fielding restrictions are employed.
Over the past couple of years we have seen things such as “free-hit” added to the ODI rules and before you know more rules could be added/modified which will give the batting side the ability to call the shots on fielding arrangements
I guess the pressure from the T20 format is really showing up on the ODIs….

Well I do agree with the point as there have been a lot of experimental things hapenning in the ODI cricket format. I don’t think these new ideas are really required. 20-20 is already there to provide the full time-masti/entertainment.

Precisely!! So they should leave the Test Cricket and ODIs alone and do all the innovation/creativity in T20….

As long as they leave test cricket alone, I do not mind rules of ODIs changing.
But the fact is that if Test Cricket is left alone, then it will be difficult to attract more people to it. Which is so sad, because playing Test Cricket, according to me, tests the skills, temperament as well as the longevity of every player. It tests you the most, and the results are also the most gratifying!
