MAHENDRA SINGH DHONI - A LEADER INDEED (BUILT TOUGH)
November 13th, 2008 by chetanmalikinNearly from the past two and a half decades after the days of cricketing great Kapil Dev, INDIA was struggling to find a leader who could lead the team with a cool head and mental toughness till Mahendra Singh Dhoni was declared the captain of Indian cricket team in all the three forms of the game, now.
Proving his worth already as the captain of the victorious Indian team in the keenly contested first ever T20 World Cup, the charge taken by him in the 50 over format and the leadership spirit does not need any clarification either. India’s success in the 2007 Commonwealth Bank Triangular series in Australia speaks for itself.
And now, let us all applaud him for taking the team together and winning the AIRTEL Border-Gavaskar trophy 2-0, the worst defeat faced by Australia in 25 years. After all, Test cricket is the real test for any cricketer in the world and being victorious in the 5-day game is really creditable. At this point of time, I will like to take this opportunity of his knock in the 2nd innings in the 4th test at Nagpur. He along with Harbhajan (both the half-centurions) in the 2nd innings just simply turned the game away from the Australians which they had a chance of winning with India at 166-6 at Tea on day 4.Kudos to the brave innings by both of them.
I being a great fan of the ex-Australian skipper Steve Waugh would like to call MSD as the Indian STEVE WAUGH. In the battle of nerves, the mental toughness accompanied with the cool temperament exhibited by MS just remembers me of the times of Steve Waugh’s leadership, remember his hundred against South Africa in the semi-finals of the 1999 World Cup. That was probably the 4th century of Steve Waugh’s career but he really made it count by bringing home the world cup then.
So now, the time has come for INDIA to take things as they come and maintain the winning spree thereafter.
Great going India – keep it up. !! ALL THE BEST !!

Well said chetanmalikin. The partnership between Dhoni and Bhajji on the 4th day (after-tea session) was the match-turner. The fact that the Captain was playing at one end definitely helped the matters immensely.
I especially liked your comparison of MSD with SW and would like to add one more very peculiar thing about Dhoni that I had seen a long long time ago. He is one the only players I have seen, who play the game with a smile on their faces (almost always)…..

I agree. Terrific comparison. Though their playing styles were quite different, but their temperament and attitude towards the game is the same.
